As part of our waste audit methodology, Waste Audit Canada must ensure the waste generated at your facility is properly analyzed. We do this by conducting an on-site evaluation and material breakdown of a 24-hour sample of the waste and recycling at your facility or at the facility where your waste is taken.

The samples we collect are further broken down by each area outlined in our Audit Scope.

01qualifying

Sample materials collected during our waste audits will be observed at your facility from the origin of their generation and classified in separate categories. Each category of material will be broken down to identify the materials that each was comprised of. The categories of materials we assess include

  • Organics (food waste)
  • General landfill waste
  • Other (scrap, steel, wood, printer/copier toner, confidential shredding)
  • Source separated recyclables (plastic, glass, metals)
  • Source separated paper fibres (cardboard, boxboard and various papers)

02quantifying

Following qualification, we will begin to observe the materials gathered in step one. This will occur inside the facility or at a designated area on your facility grounds. Waste samples from all areas of your facility will be observed during this point in the process. Our waste auditors will carefully sort and weigh sample materials in order to properly quantify the waste generation. We will evaluate the information provided by you (or your hauling vendor) about the annual quantities of each waste stream in order to determine the estimates for a baseline year.

03 evaluating processes

At this stage of our waste audit, we continue our on-site analysis and have conversations with facility management about current processes for managing waste. After we identify and evaluate these processes, we will review your current recycling programs and determine if and where efficiency can be increased.

The final step in our waste audit is to identify a baseline to measure the progress of future recycling initiatives and suggest recommendations to improve the waste and recycling processes and increase landfill diversion at the facility.
